The conference this year has several of the Top 30 Visionaries in Palliative Care named in 2013 by the American Association of Hospice and Palliative Care (AAHPM) speaking and sharing their expertise. Among these, Charles von Gunten, MD, will speak on upstream/early intervention palliative care, Martha Twaddle, MD, will discuss staying current with changes in hospice, David Weissman, MD will demonstrate how to conduct an effective family meeting. In addition, Art Derse, MD, JD, MCW Professor of Ethics, will speak on ethical and legal issues at end-of-life.

Plenary Speakers:
Arthur R. Derse, MD, JD, FACEP
Director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities, a Julia and David Uihlein Professor of Medical Humanities, and Professor of Bioethics and Emergency Medicine at Medical College of Wisconsin, will speak on ethical and legal issues in palliative care.
He is a member of the board of the American Society for Law, Medicine and Ethics (ASLME), and member and past chair of the Ethics Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). He is a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH), and former chair of the National Ethics Committee of the Veterans Health Administration, He served as Senior Consultant for Academic Affairs at the American Medical Association’s Institute for Ethics and as a member of the American Bar Association’s Commission on Law and Aging.
Martha L. Twaddle, MD, FACP, FAAHPM
A nationally recognized expert in hospice and palliative medicine, Dr. Martha L. Twaddle was named JourneyCare's Senior Vice President of Medical Excellence and Innovation last May and also serves as Chief Medical Officer and Lead Physician for Aspire Health Medical Partners of Illinois. She will inform us of new hospice regulations challenges. Dr. Twaddle's unique talents and contributions have helped increase the understanding of and access to hospice and palliative medicine locally, regionally and nationally. She is active in research and has been published extensively in peer-reviewed articles and other publications on the importance and benefits of hospice and palliative medicine. Serves as Chief Medical Officer and Lead Physician for Aspire Health Medical Partners of Illinois.
Charles F. von Gunten, MD, PhD, FACP, FAAHPM
Vice President, Medical Affairs, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, OhioHealth, will speak on early intervention palliative care. Dr. Charles F. von Gunten is the Vice President, Medical Affairs, Hospice and Palliative Medicine for the OhioHealth System based in Columbus, Ohio. He is the Chairman, Test Committee, Hospice & Palliative Medicine, American Board of Medical Specialties, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, and Co-Principal for the Education for Physicians on End-of-life Care (EPEC) Project and its revision for oncology, EPEC-O.
David E. Weissman, MD, FAACP
Dr. Weissman is Professor Emeritus, and Founder of the Medical College of Wisconsin Palliative Care Center. In 1991 he began one of the first academic palliative care programs in the United States. In 2003, the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Palliative Care Program was designated as one of six United States Palliative Care Leadership Center’s by the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC). Dr. Weissman was the Founding Editor of the Journal of Palliative Medicine and EPERC (End of Life/Palliative Education Resource Center). Dr. Weissman’s professional passions include the development of robust health professional education programs; the successful start-up and growth of hospital based palliative care programs and the integration of systems-change work to improve the patient experience in all health care settings.

Learning Objectives
- Develop a concurrent model for “upstream” palliative care programs.
- Discuss ethical and legal issues that will challenge even the most experienced palliative care providers.
- Examine challenging skin issues in the palliative care patient and discuss effective treatment options.
- Identify challenges that may arise when patients present with troubling “factitious disorders.”
- Evaluate the concept of a “natural death” and if it is any longer possible.
- Examine multicultural issues that influence care provided at end-of-life.
- Demonstrate how to lead a family goals of care conference.
- Identify and examine factors that lead to moral distress in palliative care nursing.
- Outline challenges in end-of-life care for veterans.
- Examine neurological prognostication in patients who have undergone hypothermia protocols.
- Discuss the dilemmas in prescribing medication for the palliative care patient from intake to hospital discharge.
- Outline the challenges that current regulations place on delivering hospice care.
- Describe how to launch a generalist-level palliative care program.
