Program Description:

The Zablocki VAMC Grand Rounds focuses on medical and healthcare issues that are relevant to the veteran population, our healthcare system, and our facility. Focus is placed on care transformation initiatives, emerging science, opportunities for improvement in care quality/safety, and staff interest/need for further education. In the coming year, we will have planned/proposed presentations on: Mental Health [The Veteran population has a high prevalence of mental illness. Providers need to maintain up to date information on mental illness, such as screening, appropriate referrals and treatment. There are available therapeutic resources that may help Veterans that providers are not familiar with or unaware of. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration published a report in November 2016 that found the prevalence of serious mental illness was higher among male veterans than male nonveterans, and the prevalence of major depressive episode was higher among female veterans than female nonveterans. The study also found that among those between 18 and 25, veterans had higher rates of nonmedical use of pain relievers, methamphetamine use, and alcohol abuse/dependence compared to nonveterans.], Chronic pain [Chronic pain is a national issue. The Veteran population also has a high prevalence of chronic pain. Appropriate treatment and management of chronic pain remains uncertain. Understanding what physical therapy provides and how it is part of comprehensive pain management is essential. The 2014 VA Pain Management Opioid Safety guide reported that more than 50% of male VA patients in primary care report chronic pain; the prevalence may be higher in female Veterans.], Pharmaceutical [Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern globally. It is crucial to understand the potential complications related to indiscreet use of antibiotics and learn what can be done to prevent emerging resistance. The CDC reports that every year, in the United States, 2 million people are infected with bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 die as a direct result of these infections.], Quality Improvement/ Interdisciplinary team discharge planning [Reducing hospital readmission rates is a goal for hospitals across the country. Past studies have shown that individualized discharge plans compared to routine plans can reduce readmissions. In addition, improving communication among healthcare team members and between patient and providers continues to be an area of focus.], Lymphedema [A medical diagnosis that affects many veterans. The condition is associated with cancer, cancer treatment, as well as obesity and inflammatory disorders. An update on diagnosing and appropriate treatment options may help prevent complications related to lymphedema.], Back Pain [Recent analysis of the National Health Interview Survey showed that veterans were more likely than nonveterans to have any back pain and back pain with or without sciatica. Knowledge of medical and surgical management of back pain is crucial to provide the most appropriate cares to veterans.]
