Advances in Neurology for the Practicing Provider
The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Neurology is sponsoring a continuing education program designed for the primary care providers and general neurologists in the community as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows and students. The program “Advances in Neurology for the Practicing Provider” will be held at the Oak Creek Community Center’s Ballroom. We are offering 8.75 CME credits for Physicians and Nurse Practitioners. Course fees will be modest to cover costs, including providing a box lunch to be enjoyed while listening to our keynote speaker, Lindsey Nelson PhD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery in Brain Injury Research at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin discussing “Minor Traumatic Brain Injury: Prevention, Assessment and Treatment”The topics will be approached from an approach of several providers sharing their respective insights in the disorders and their treatments with a focus on individual cases and treatment situations. The lectures will lead the community practitioners through the approach that specialists in each area would take to assessing the patient, ordering diagnostic testing, determining decision points for referral and presenting evidence-based therapeutic recommendations suitable for the community setting. Ample time for participation from the audience will be provided to discuss individual topical issues. This year’s speakers will include Doctors Cheryl Blaschuk, APNP; Diane Book, MD; Chad Carlson, MD; Malgorzata Franczak, MD; Frederick Freitag, DO; Elias Granadillo, MD; Ann Helms, MD; Ahmad Marashly, MD, Fallon Schloemer, DO; and Laura Umfleet, PsyD.Questions? Current State of the Opioid Epidemic 2018
Because opioid addiction is a national crisis with increasing numbers many patients enter the hospital system with addiction challenges.  APP staff needs to be aware of new medications patients might be on for opioid addiction treatment as well as resources for the patient who requires opioid addiction treatment.   Historically patient care standards stressed assessing every patient for pain with the assumption that their pain was “whatever the patient said it was” and prescription pain medication was provided and dosed based on patient’s response in their verbalization of a pain score.  Now, as outlined above in letter d, there is an initiative to change pain assessment, provide interventions beyond the use of medication and focus on new prescribing guidelines for providers.  By introducing APP staff to these new standards as well as community resources and by sharing our collective experiences will enable all staff to provide improved patient care.***Registration Starts 12:00 PM***
