Café au lait macules and NF1 for the Primary Care Provider
Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a common genetic disorder (1 in every 3000-4000). Early detection is important to ensure that patients are referred to necessary specialists (ophthalmology, neuropsychology, etc) and families are provided with thorough disease education. Café au lait macules are often the initial finding that identifies NF1 as a possible diagnosis. Diagnostic criteria has been evolving. Community PCPs may not be aware of current diagnostic criteria. Café au lait macules (CALMS) and similar skin findings can be indicative of other genetic disorders. Baseline understanding of CALMS and NF1 diagnostic criteria will encourage appropriate referrals to a provider who can diagnose and differentiate between NF1 and other disorders.
