Program Description:
This educational activity is designed to address deficits in both resident and faculty education in obstetrics and gynecology. This deficit is identified in three ways:
- Results of the annual in-service examination taken by ob/gyn residents across the country. We are provided with results by topic including those topics in which are residents consistently answered questions incorrectly. Those topics in which > 50% of residents were identified as deficient are used for setting up lecture topics for the year. Results of our education can be seen on a annual basis as the core topics for obstetrics and gynecology are assessed on this examination every year.
- Quarterly evaluation of the educational program is mandatory for all departmental faculty, including identification of topics in which they feel education has been inadequate. This is an anonymous online feedback program through New Innovations. This feedback is also used to further expand on needed topics for weekly conferences.
- Ongoing discussion with the prior co-ordinators of this educational conference, Drs. Paul Lemen and Raj Narayan, regarding identified knowledge deficits as identified over the past three years, as well as in discussion with our Quality Physician Leader, Dr. Timothy Klatt, to identify knowledge gaps that have affected quality care in our department.
Speakers with an identified expertise in the identified deficit topics are invited to present at one of three sites on a Wednesday morning from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. The formats of the learning activities include lectures, case-based discussions, interactive sessions using audience response systems, small group and problem based learning modules and hands-on training workshops. The learners are medical students, obstetrics and gynecology residents, fellow and attending staff and community physicians.
