Pediatric Mental Health Screening Tools

Based on the AAP's Mental Health Toolkit (2010) and the AAP policy statement on behavioral health integration into primary care (2009), this educational opportunity is designed to support the health care professionals in behavioral health provision. This one-hour module reviews AAP recommendations on pediatric mental health screening tools and some of the supporting literature. Professionals learn about two mental health screening tools and are provided with copies of each: Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social Emotional-Second Edition, and Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17.

Learning Objectives

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

1. Understand the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Task Force on Mental Health’s recommendations around mental health screening.

2. Understand basic implementation of the ASQ:SE-2 and PSC-17 screening tools
3. Identify ways to incorporate mental health screening into well-child care delivery in primary care practice

4. Identify resources for children with mental health concerns and their families, as well as clinicians serving them
