Program Description:

This course is designed to provide enhanced training for providers that have experience using the Electronic Health Record (EHR) at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for patient care. The course focuses on topics related to quality improvement efforts and delivers the content as a comprehensive learning bundle.

The classroom approach encourages providers to learn about quality initiatives and how to apply them to their current clinical practice using Epic. Providers will become familiar with and correctly use recently developed tools that support efficient use of the Epic system and the delivery of safe and effective patient care. The course addresses the following Institute of Medicine (IOM) quality objectives: Safety, Efficiency, Effectiveness, Practice-based learning & Improvement, Timeliness, and Patient Centered.

Providers will receive CME credit for completing this course, including completion of a pre-course and post-course survey. Providers should register for the “Provider Epic Education” course in Children’s University for the date they plan to attend.

Learning objectives:

After completing this course, providers should be able to: 1.) Identify the availability of current tools and resources, and 2.) Understand how to use the tools to improve current knowledge and use of the Epic system.

  • The learner will become familiar with and correctly use recently developed Epic tools that include decision-support to help them correctly identify risks and order appropriate tests or medications.  Using these tools correctly will also improve efficiency in ordering and documentation.
  • Epic provide their customers with Provider Efficiency Profile (PEP) reports that identify how much time providers log in the system, what efficiency tools they currently have set up and how often they use these tools.
  • We plan to leverage pre- and post-session surveys to monitor how providers self-report their improved efficiency and compare that to the data provided by the PEP reports. This will allow us to identify the value of the session and make real-time improvements.
  • This CE activity would be modeled in part after the Epic Ambulatory Provider Education sessions implemented by the Gunderson health system where CME credit was offered for participating providers. The following information was presented by the Gunderson training team to their administrative leaders.
