Program Description:

The Zablocki VAMC Grand Rounds focuses on medical and healthcare issues that are prevalent or particularly relevant to veterans.  From that universe of topics, we encourage case-based presentations that provide updates on areas where medical care, education or research are changing/evolving; or where outcomes indicate opportunities for improvement.  In the coming year, we will have planned/proposed presentations on Decision making capacity [Large numbers of inpatients with dementia who require high levels of care/observation [e.g. continuous protective observation], and are difficult to place in other levels or care], Tobacco use cessation [National VA mandate to change our inpatient Joint Commission ORYX measures - poor performance on required inptatient tobacco cessation efforts documentation], Vitamin D testing an treatment [lab, pharmacy, and geriatrics leaders feel that providers are over testing and over treating vitamin D disorders], Single patient multi-use vials [New patient safety/infection control requirement that multi-use drug vials only be used on single patient requires staff education], Military sexual trauma [High prevalence in female veterans, and recent changes in local programs and personnel], Hepatitis C [High prevalence in veterans, and multiple new/emerging high cost therapies], Discharge planning [Press-Ganey data indicate patient dissatisfaction with current processes], Simulation education [Review educational rationale and outcomes; new simulation center in the faciity], and Hyperlipidemia Treatment [Updated guidelines on dyslipidemia treatment].
