The purpose of this conference is to provide individuals in the healthcare industry with knowledge and strategies to help them understand, skillfully assess and manage incidents involving threats and threatening
behavior. Speakers will apply threat management strategies developed by leading safety experts to the healthcare industry where leaders need to assure safety while respecting the duties attached to the providerpatient
relationship.


Attendees who are new to TA&M should expect to leave the seminar with the foundation necessary to confidently assess and manage threatening situations, and the knowledge required to begin developing a
TA&M Program in their institution. Those with more experience will have the opportunity to challenge their current beliefs and gain valuable insight from experts. All attendees will have the opportunity to develop
useful relationships with colleagues in the field.

Dr. James Cawood

  • President of Factor One with over 25 years’ experience specializing in threat assessment and management, violence risk assessment, behavioral analysis, security consulting, and investigations.
  • Has successfully assessed and managed over 4,500 violence-related cases for federal and state government agencies, universities and colleges, public and private corporations, and other business entities throughout North America. 
  • Was Chairman of the committee established by the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) that developed the Risk Assessment Guideline Elements for Violence (RAGE-V), created to help public and private sectors assess and manage situations involving potential violence.  Former President of ATAP.
  • Co-author of Violence Assessment and Intervention: The Practitioner’s Handbook (pictured), an authoritative guide for practitioners. 
  • Author of numerous articles and book chapters and currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Threat Assessment and Management.
  • Masters Degree in Forensic Psychology from Argosy University and a PhD in Psychology from Northcentral University.

William Zimmerman

  • 32-year veteran of the United States Capitol Police
  • Senior Consultant with Sigma Threat Management Associates 
  • Before his retirement in 2015, Detective Zimmerman was assigned to the Threat Assessment Section (TAS), and was responsible for investigating threats against Members of the United States Congress, their families, and other salutary protectees.  The TAS is responsible for reviewing and evaluating inappropriate contact with members’ offices in Washington, D.C., and their home offices.  
  • Detective Zimmerman has been involved with creating numerous threat management sections throughout the United States and Great Britain.
  • First President of ATAP’s Washington, D.C. Chapter (1994) and recently completed another term as chapter President.
  • First recipient of the ATAP Meritorious Service Award.

Michèle Stuart 

  • Has taught hundreds of classes over the past 15 years in open source intelligence (OSINT) and social media investigations for the law enforcement and military intelligence communities including US Marshals, FBI, DOJ, the Department of Homeland Security, and the international financial and insurance industries
  • Instructor at Quantico (FBI Academy) for international training programs
  • Adjunct Professor with the University of Virginia

  • Over 25 years’ experience in OSINT, threat assessments, corporate, competitive, & counter intelligence, organized retail crime, and insurance fraud & financial investigations

Sheridan Ryan, JD, PT, CTM, CPHRM

  • Associate Director of Risk Management at the Medical College of Wisconsin
  • Certified Threat Manager (certified by ATAP)
  • Assisted with developing the MCW risk management department’s standard operating procedures for assessing and responding to threats and threatening behavior directed toward MCW’s 2,000 providers
  • Member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP)
  • Presented the session “Healthcare Threat Management: What’s Different & Why” at ATAP’s 2016 Annual Conference, and others locally, regionally and nationally
  • Formed the MCW-Froedtert Hospital – Children’s Hospital of WI Threat Assessment & Management committee for managing threats

  • Prior to joining MCW's risk management department in January 2009, Sheridan worked as a plaintiffs’ personal injury attorney in Texas and Chicago, litigating medical malpractice and other injury cases. Before becoming an attorney, Sheridan practiced as a physical therapist in a variety of health-care settings.

Jonathan Wertz, JD, RN, CPHRM

  • Director of Risk Management at the Medical College of Wisconsin
  • Received training at Gavin de Becker & Associates Academy
  • Developed the MCW Risk Management department’s standard operating procedures for assessing and responding to threats and threatening behavior directed toward MCW’s 2000 providers
  • Member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals
  • Speaks locally and nationally on healthcare workplace violence
  • Before joining MCW, Jon worked as an attorney in the litigation department at Michael Best &
  • Friedrich, LLP. Prior to his legal career, Jon worked as an RN in the emergency department and ICU at Aurora-Sinai in downtown Milwaukee
