Target Audience
Opioid prescribers in the state of Wisconsin
Learning Objectives
- Define addiction, opioid abuse, involuntary diversion and voluntary diversion and be able to distinguish these terms from physical dependence and opioid tolerance.
- Describe at least two evidence-based screening tools for identifying opioid misuse and abuse in seriously ill patients.
- Safely manage the symptoms of opioid withdrawal when opioids are discontinued.
- Describe starting doses for two oral and two parenteral opioids in palliative care.
- List three opioid equi-analgesic and dose escalation principles.
- Describe three principles of writing opioid prescription orders in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
