Forward2018 MCW Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Symposium
Pancreatic cancer affects 45,000 persons in the US annually and therefore is only the 10th most common incident cancer.However, it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US and therefore understanding the stage-specific management of pancreatic cancer is an important medical and public health issue.
The management of pancreatic cancer is rapidly changing with an increasing emphasis on neoadjuvant therapy for early stage pancreatic cancer and surgery is now being performed in select patients with more advanced staged disease.This course is designed to provide practitioners a better understanding of the rationale and implementation of neoadjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer and explore exciting new investigational approaches to the disease.
Management of pancreatic cancer can be complicated and confusing.
Pancreatic cancer can be confusing for several reasons:
• There is not a standardized radiographic criteria for clinical staging – can vary by clinical source or institution.
• Management of pancreatic cancer frequently involves multi-disciplinary teams and coordination of multiple physicians can be complicated.
• Stigma and perception from the general public about realistic survival, however, patients with pancreatic cancer are currently experiencing the most promising survival in the last 30 years.
This symposium provides background into the diagnosis and work-up of all stages of pancreatic cancer for clinicians who are not familiar with the management of pancreatic cancer. In addition, the symposium will highlight the multimodality treatment options for resectable, borderline resectable, locally advanced, and metastatic patients.
