Program Description:

Antibiotics cost the health care system billions of dollars each year, and treating conditions such as acute bronchitis adds to the cost. Current guidelines recommend against antibiotic treatment for acute bronchitis in adults who are otherwise healthy because overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance and harmful side effects.

ABIM’s Choosing Wisely goal is to reduce the use of tests and treatments that are overused according to national medical specialty societies. The focus on antibiotic overuse was driven by estimates from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that more than half the antibiotics used in the United States are prescribed unnecessarily or used improperly.National prescribing rate is 72%;FMCW baseline rate was 64%.The goal of the Choosing Wisely Grant is to reduce antibiotic prescribing rate by 20% through defined interventions including CME/ Academic detailing.
