Clinical Genetics Advanced Practice Provider Conference (CGAPP) 2019
Geneticists are in great demand across the country. In 2018 only 28% (11 of 40) of Medical Genetics Fellowship programs were filled. In addition, of the 56 genetics positions available, only 23 were filled (41%) [NRMP data]. The gap between supply and demand is only widening. MCW filled our need by utilizing the Nurse Practitioner’s (NP) clinical expertise and integrated them into Genetics. However, Genetics training is not embedded into standard graduate nursing programs. Currently, nothing exists to train the novice Genetics advance practice provider (APP) and provide continuing education that is relevant to the APP.
The biggest barrier to change in practice is the lack of existing education there is for the nurse practitioner working in clinical genetics. This conference would provide the APP with relevant education for their practice. Many genetics APPs work autonomously with minimal physician oversight as these Geneticists are often involved in research or may be working part time. Many APPs feel a barrier to additional Genetics support and networking with other APPs. One of the goals of the Clinical Genetics Advance Practice Provider Conference, is to provide a panel discussion of APPs from across the country and to also offer networking opportunities for further collaboration and dialogue.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for advance practice providers currently working in clinical genetics.
Learning Objectives
- After hearing the 101-lecture series, the NP will know the basic pathophysiology and medical management of connective tissue disorders, RASopathies, and LSD/MPS diseases.
- The NP will know the difference between all types of genetic testing including karyotype, microarray, gene sequencing, whole exome and genome sequencing, and will feel comfortable using online database resources.
- For the more advanced NP in Genetics, impactful teachings in the areas of genomics, pharmacogenomics, and epigenomics will offer greater knowledge into these hot topic areas and the research being done.
- Using five NPs from across the country, our panel will provide discussion in areas of professionalism, best-practices, the utilization of NPs from one clinic to another, and needs of the clinical NP in Genetics.
