414 Hope & Heal: Uniting for Suicide Prevention and Mental Wellness

This 4-day event will bring together health care professionals, community-based organizations, and suicide prevention advocates to share information about evidence-based suicide prevention practices, including those intended to eliminate racial disparities in suicide locally and across Wisconsin. September 6th will include a keynote and facilitated action-planning by Brandon J. Johnson, Public Health Advisor in SAMSHA’s Suicide Prevention Branch. September 9-11th will be a Masterclass in Meaning-Focused Grief Therapy, led by Dr. Robert A. Neimeyer and Dr. Carolyn Ng, intended to give helping professionals of all disciplines the conceptual and practical tools they require to work alongside clients struggling with painful, preoccupying and protracted grief, as they strive to find significance in the face of devastating bereavement. 
 
Limited scholarships are available to those who demonstrate need and commitment to addressing suicide within marginalized communities. If interested in a scholarship, please complete this form before registering. 
 
This conference is hosted by Prevent Suicide Greater Milwaukee, Milwaukee County Behavioral Health, and the Medical College of Wisconsin. 
 
This conference is funded in part by the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment, as well as in part by federal award number SLFRP0135 awarded to the Medical College of Wisconsin via the Wisconsin Department of Administration by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. 

Target Audience

The primary audience for this event includes individuals and organizations who provide care and support for individuals at risk of suicide, including individuals who have experienced a sudden, traumatic loss. This includes clinical health care providers, therapists, social workers, and community-based organizations. We are also inviting suicide prevention advocates, including those with lived experience, to this event to support the championing of evidence-based suicide prevention and postvention strategies in our community.

Presenter: Brandon J. Johnson
At the end of this event, participants will be able to:
1.  Describe the incidence of suicide in Milwaukee County and describe racial disparities in suicide in our community.
2.  Articulate evidence-based suicide prevention strategies that are culturally appropriate for disproportionately affected groups in our community.
3.  Explore opportunities to implement evidence-based suicide prevention strategies within their clinic or agency.
 

September 9, 10, 11th

Presenters: Carolyn Ng, Robert Neimeyer

At the end of this event, participants will be able to:
1.  Identify current evidence-based practices and guidelines for providing grief therapy to address the needs of those impacted by traumatic losses, including suicide loss.
2.  Increase their self-efficacy to support individuals experiencing grief after a traumatic loss by at least 25%.
3.  Identify at least 2 practices to apply training content to their current work with bereaved individuals.
