Anorexia Nervosa, Involuntary Treatment, and Decision-Making Capacity: Ethical Issues That Arise in the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

June 14, 2024
This program will explore some of the ethical issues that arise in the care and treatment of individuals with anorexia nervosa. The central themes of the program are (1) deciding when treating individuals with anorexia nervosa over their objection is and is not ethically justified (including addressing the concept of terminal anorexia nervosa), (2) issues related to assessing decision-making capacity in individuals with anorexia nervosa, and (3) the use of psychiatric advance directives in relation to the treatment (or the refusal of treatment) for anorexia nervosa. We will explore these themes through professional and personal experiences.
