Program Description: 
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Grand Rounds provides new and updated information in the field of mental health to aid in continuing professional development. This program highlights the latest information in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, the newest research areas, and other pertinent issues in clinical psychiatry and mental health. Session presentations are held on Wednesday mornings 8-9 a.m., virtually and at the Medical College of Wisconsin Research Park Center when conditions permit. Grand Rounds runs the first three Wednesdays of each month from September through June. Generally, in-person Grand Rounds will take place on the 3rd Wednesday of that month's Grand Rounds.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Describe Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs) and explain their role in promoting patient autonomy during mental health crises.
  • Analyze the current status of PADs in WI, highlighting the absence of formal mechanisms.
  • Discuss the legal and historical context of PADs, including how current civil commitment laws (e.g., Ch51) interact with and potentially override PADs.
  • Analyze the critiques and barriers to PAD adoption, including disability rights concerns, legal conflicts, and ethical dilemmas around irrevocability.
  • Assess the medicolegal and ethical considerations of PADs, such as the concept of Ulysses contracts and balancing autonomy with treatment needs.
  • Create potential solutions for implementing PADs in Wisconsin, including legislative reforms and clearer statutory language.
