Scholarship in Progress is a virtual seminar series that provides opportunity for those engaged in child health in the areas of research, education and quality improvement to share their scholarly activity and promote interaction and opportunities among researchers and providers. Participants are exposed to ongoing activities in basic, translational and clinical research, educational development and quality improvements being performed by researchers and providers within pediatrics and child health.

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:
- Describe the role of emergency departments as a critical point of contact for identifying suicide risk among youth and delivering brief suicide prevention interventions.
- Compare current approaches to suicide risk screening in pediatric emergency departments, including differences in screening tools, workflows, and follow-up practices.
- Identify key barriers and facilitators influencing implementation of suicide screening protocols in pediatric emergency settings.
- Apply implementation science and health services research strategies to evaluate variation in suicide screening practices across pediatric emergency departments.
- Discuss opportunities to standardize screening and brief intervention practices to improve early identification, care transitions, and suicide prevention outcomes.
- Clinical predictors, including pain severity at discharge, opioid requirements, co-existing complications (e.g., acute chest syndrome risk, infection, dehydration), prior ED utilization patterns, and inadequate pain control during the index visit
- Patient-level factors, such as barriers to outpatient follow-up, medication access, transportation challenges, health literacy, and psychosocial stressors
- Care delivery factors, including discharge planning quality, variability in pain management protocols, time to analgesia, and availability of hematology support
- Structural contributors, such as disparities in care, insurance status, and access to comprehensive sickle cell programs
