Program Description: 

This is a weekly conference dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the American Board of Pediatrics Board Content within Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Attending this lecture series will expand one's medical knowledge of the core principles of pediatric critical care medicine, including pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, and management for patients in the pediatric ICU.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Integrate knowledge of ultrasound physics and machine knobology to acquire and optimize diagnostically useful images in clinical practice.
  • Analyze vascular anatomy using ultrasound to guide appropriate vascular access technique and site selection.
  • Complete a Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) Exam.
  • Complete a Focused Assessment with Sonography for Free Fluid (FAFF) Exam.
  • Identify the diaphragm and characterize its movement.
  • Perform parasternal long and short axis views of the heart.
  • Identify the cardiac structures visualized in an optimized apical 4 and 5 chamber view.
  • Perform subcostal long and short axis views of the heart.
  • Perform all of the standard views of a hemodynamic assessment, including IVC Transverse and Longitudinal Views, Subcostal View, Parasternal Long Axis View, Parasternal Short Axis View, and Apical 4 Chamber View.
  • Explain how appropriate imaging plane selection influences accurate ultrasound image interpretation in clinical practice.
  • Explain the strengths and weaknesses of all basic cardiac views (Subcostal, Parasternal Long Axis, Parasternal Short Axis, and Apical 4 Chamber) in qualitative ventricular functional assessment.
  • Describe the best views for RV functional assessment.
