  • Outline the component parts of a medical evaluation/examination when sexual abuse is a concern and document key elements in the clinical record in a manner consistent with routine pediatric practice.
  • Communicate with children using developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed language to facilitate conversations about “OK” and “not OK” experiences in clinical encounters.
  • Differentiate developmentally expected sexual behaviors from concerning behaviors in children and assess when further evaluation or referral is warranted in clinical practice.
  • Incorporate anticipatory guidance strategies for the primary prevention of child sexual abuse into routine pediatric care (e.g., well-child visits) by counseling caregivers and patients using practical, age-appropriate messaging.
