Abdominal Pain

Currently, there is no standardized graduate education or certification program for APNs or PAs focusing on Pediatric Hospital Medicine. APPs graduate their educational programs with a wide range of clinical experiences and variation in the quality of their training. APPs require “on the Job” training to build competency.  There are published recommended competencies in pediatric hospital medicine for physicians in training by currently there are no corresponding recommendations for training APPs.

Advanced Practice Providers in Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine

Learning Objectives

  • Review the epidemiology, risk factors and presenting symptoms of the most common causes of acute abdominal pain in children
  • Recognize the pattern of symptoms consistent with functional abdominal pain
  • Identify red flags that should prompt further diagnostic testing or evaluation in children presenting with abdominal pain
  • Develop confidence in counseling patients and families on the evaluation and treatment of common causes of abdominal pain
