  • Role of APPs in the perioperative period

                Discussion of AA, CRNA, scope of practice, what we do at froedtert vs facilities with different practice models

  • Identifying the need for sedation or anesthesia

                Spectrum of consciousness, what constitutes sedation vs MAC vs general anesthesia

                Matching degree of procedure stimulation with required level of consciousness, patient selection

  • Preparing the patient for the perioperative period

                Risk stratification- ASA status, major cardiac and pulmonary risk stratification tools

                Preop testing

                Preop medication changes

                Shared decision making, multidisciplinary decision making, and informed consent

  • Maximizing safety during moderate sedation

                Discussion of who is qualified to perform sedation, re Froedtert policy

                Evidence based measures to improve sedation safety- capnography, monitoring, patient selection, etc

The purpose of APP Grand Rounds is to enhance the ability of PAs and APNs to recognize, diagnose and manage common medical conditions across the continuum of presentation in the office/outpatient setting to exacerbation of these conditions requiring management in an acute care setting.
