Program Description:
Michael Doring Connelly, a 40-plus-year healthcare veteran and former CEO of Mercy Health, discusses his book, The Journey’s End: An Investigation into Death and Dying in Modern America. The discussion will share his research about how to change the standard approach to end-of-life care and the practical benefits of facing death as a reality rather than trying to medicalize it. Connelly claims that when the system stops fighting death with invasive procedures and prescription drugs, dying becomes a shared, caring, family experience rather than a cold, clinical and medical ordeal. He aims to raise awareness of the key issues driving the dysfunction of U.S. health care, with attention to how the elderly bear the brunt, and encouraging people to develop “death literacy.”

Bioethics and Medical Humanities Grand Rounds provides a monthly forum for teaching participants to resolve cases based on the best ethical practices. Bioethics and Medical Humanities Grand Rounds also provides information on any legislative changes that occur so that clinicians are ready to implement them. The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities is the only clinical ethics center in Wisconsin. The faculty are leaders in clinical ethics and set the agenda for clinical ethics practice in Southeastern Wisconsin.
