This educational activity is designed to provide current and best practice sessions relating to the prevention, treatment and detection of child abuse and neglect.
 
To improve the interdisciplinary response to child maltreatment and to promote effective child maltreatment strategies.
 
American families have been undergoing major changes in demographic structure, economic statue and health care coverage, all of which can influence child maltreatment.  More children experience many transitions in living arrangements within their households.  Children are more likely to live with nonbiological fathers, and more likely have step-siblings in a household.  The poverty rate among children is higher than for any other age group in the United States; at about 22% in 2010.  
 
In Wisconsin, the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Survey asked adults about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that they may have had prior to age 18.  ACEs include the various forms of child abuse.  Results showed that 56% of the adult population experienced at least one ACE, which in turn has a serious impact on the adult well-being of Wisconsin residents.  In the area of mental health, health risk behaviors, physical health, socioeconomic status, health insurance and access to care, and quality of life, Wisconsin adults with higher ACE scores have poorer outcomes.
 
Therefore, to help reduce ACEs in Wisconsin’s children and to minimize the physical health, mental health and social consequences of childhood trauma, conference participants will choose from a variety of sessions offered by experts in the field.  Topics include: “Corporal Punishment,” “Fractures – When to Suspect Abuse,” “Neglected Children – Challenges & Controversies,”  “Drug Endangered Children,”  “Stress Trauma and Self-Care for Helping Professionals,” and “Adverse Childhood Experiences in Wisconsin:  What we know, Where we are headed.” 
 
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin. The Medical College of Wisconsin is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
 
The Medical College of Wisconsin designates this live activity for a maximum of 18.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits ™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with extent of their participation in the activity.

Physicians, nurses, social workers, law enforcement, and prevention staff

Learning Objectives

1.    Identify strategies for accurately identifying child maltreatment.

2.    Have an improved understanding of trauma-informed practices regarding care of children and families who are at risk of maltreatment.

3.    Implement at least one strategy to improve self-care while working with traumatized families and children.
