Program Description: 

The series is intended to showcase various expertise of the MCW Emergency Medicine faculty and additionally includes regional and national EM expert presenters.  The faculty Grand Rounds speakers are asked to present topics that are cutting edge and  backed by research and scholarship in the field.  The attendees are able to gain knowledge that is applicable to their daily Emergency medicine practice and allow them to provide higher quality care for their patients.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to: 

  • Participants will be able to identify when sleep is essential for life and health, and it is influenced by our body's circadian rhythm.
  • Participants will be able to identify that shift work can negatively affect individual health and performance through sleep deprivation, circadian misalignment, and melatonin suppression.
  • Participants will be able to identify what strategies to consider to mitigate the effects of shift work including increasing awareness of their sleep cycle and circadian rhythm, controlling light/dark light exposure, optimizing sleep hygiene, melatonin supplementation, and various scheduling practices.
