Endocrine diseases and diabetes are common medical disorders in primary care.  With the obesity epidemic there is an epidemic of diabetes and related metabolic complications such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia.  Diabetes treatment choices have become more complicated, as such so have the guidelines.  Additionally medical treatment for obesity is available with FDA approved medications.  Additionally, medical treatment for obesity is available with FDA-approved medications.  There are new classes of medications to treat hyperlipidemia.

As the population ages the prevalence of osteoporosis has increased.  Additionally there has been an expansion of available treatment options, in addition, to an increase awareness of potential side affects of medications.

Androgen abuse is now a common problem.

Endocrinology and diabetes continues to have ever expanding treatment options, diagnostic tools and understanding of disease pathways.  The role of the primary care provider is critical in the management of endocrine and metabolic disorders.  There is a need for continued knowledge to allow the achievement of treatment guidelines.
