Otolaryngology is a diverse specialty treating patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck. Best Evidence ENT 2016 will provide practicing otolaryngogists with research findings, technologies and proven evidence-based methods to provide a systemic, concise and evidence-based method of patient assement and treatment. Best Evidence ENT 2016 will also include a mini rhinology and sinus surgery symposium.

The faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin is proud to present this inaugral conference that will cover the entire scope of the specialty. Featured honorary guest lectures include:

David R. Nielsen, MD

David R. Nielsen, MD received his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine following a bachelor degree in business-finance. He did a surgical internship at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan and then returned to the University of Utah to complete his otolaryngology residency. Dr. Nielsen finished his training with a fellowship in otology at the Greater Detroit Otologic Group, after which he moved to Arizona where he had a solo private practice in otology for 13 years before joining the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale.

In 2002 Dr. Nielsen assumed the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and its Foundation (AAO-HNSF). In this role he represented the Academy at the AMA House of Delegates; the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors and Advisory Council on Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS), and served as President and Chair of the Board of Directors of CMSS; and served on the Executive Committee of the Physicians Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI), and Chairman of the Board of the PCPI Foundation.

Dr. Nielsen has emphasized and published on quality improvement, evidence-based guidelines, and performance measurement in his role at the Academy. In January 2015, Dr. Nielsen completed his tenure as EVP and CEO, and the David R. Nielsen, MD Endowment was established to honor his significant contributions to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Dr. Nielsen is honored to present the 28th Annual Roger H. Lehman Lecture during Best Evidence ENT 2016.

Kathleen Sie, MD

Kathleen C.Y. Sie, MD earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed a residency in otolaryngology and a fellowship in auditory research at the University of Washington in Seattle. She then then did a clinical fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. 

Dr. Sie serves as Director of the Childhood Communication Center, Co-Director of the Cochlear Implant Program and the Richard and Francine Loeb Endowed Chair in Childhood Communication Research at Seattle Children’s Hospital, in addition to Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Sie’s clinical efforts are focused on communication issues of childhood and her research efforts have focused on surgical outcomes in velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and management, epidemiological studies on pediatric cochlear implantation and hearing loss in the quality of life of children.

Dr. Sie is delighted to present the 4th Annual Roger J. Toohill Lecture during Best Evidence ENT 2016.

Joseph K. Han, MD

Joseph K. Han, MD received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his otolaryngology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) followed by a fellowship in rhinology, sinus and skull base surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Dr. Han currently holds the rank of Professor and Director of the Divisions of Rhinology and Endoscopic Sinus-Skull Base Surgery and Allergy in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Virginia Beach. He is the President of the Korean-American Otolaryngology Society, President of the Tidewater Otolaryngology & Ophthalmology Society and Vice President of the Virginia Society of Otolaryngology. He serves as Chair of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Sinus Committee and is a Board member of the American Rhinological Society.

Dr. Han is proud to return to the MCW and Wisconsin as an Alumni Lecturer during Best Evidence ENT 2016.
