10th Annual “State of the Gut” An Update on Gastrointestinal Disorders 2017
Each year over 5000 referrals are made to the GI and Hepatology Division at Froedtert Hospital by primary care physicians. These referrals cover a broad area of disorders including upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders, hepatic and biliary disorders and pancreatic disorders. These referrals are made in various stages of evaluation and treatment. The inconsistencies in the evaluation and management of these disorders frequently leads to delays in providing standard of care therapies and evaluations. Primary care providers are in a unique position to provide optimum care for patients afflicted by these disorders.
Currently primary care providers lack awareness as to how evaluate and initiate management of patients with gastrointestinal, hepatic, biliary and pancreatic disorders. Previous attendees to the State of the Gut Update have informed our division that the topics covered and the recommendations made at the update have significantly improved the care that they are able to provide to their patients. Additionally, the rapid development and amount of data that primary care providers are exposed to and expected to master is overwhelming. Attendees at previous conferences have recommended topics for future updates and this has formed the foundation of this year's update. Despite this, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology continues to receive referrals with poorly performed evaluations and inappropriate therapies. The planning committee has concluded that the performance of primary care providers treating gastrointestinal, hepatic, biliary and pancreatic disorders needs to improve.
