15159 - ISTH "Platelet Function Testing in the Clinic"

Through its educational arm, the ISTH Academy, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) has begun hosting a series of webinars on practical thrombosis and haemostasis issues that scientists and physicians frequently confront. These webinars will allot time for participants to ask questions and will cover the latest information on relevant topics.

Moderated by: Raj Kasthuri

Platelet function assays

Speaker: Paolo Gresele

Key topics:

  • Description of the available methods for measuring platelet responses
  • Relative limitations and advantages of the different methods
  • Clinical conditions in which platelet function testing is of proven diagnostic importance
  • Emerging areas in which platelet function testing may be of value
  • Special problems in platelet function testing
  • Area of future clinical research

Genetics of platelet disorders

Speaker: Neil Morgan

Key topics:

  • Types of inherited platelet disorders – reduction in number of platelets or by platelet function defects
  • What have we learnt from genetic testing – new and old genes – how identified?
  • Genotyping and phenotyping approach
  • Next Generation Sequencing technologies – targeted gene sequencing and whole exome sequencing the future of genetic testing
