HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can significantly reduce the risk of HIV acquisition if taken regularly. But, unlike other prevention interventions, PrEP may only be delivered by health care providers. Currently, many primary care providers have relatively low levels of awareness of and competency to prescribe PrEP. This lack of providers prescribing PrEP in Wisconsin and in Milwaukee is reflected in an extremely low uptake of PrEP (e.g., only around 200 individuals are currently taking PrEP in Milwaukee, and the majority is currently prescribed by the MCW/Froedtert ID clinic). This CME activity aims to increase the number of primary care providers in SE Wisconsin who are aware of and possess the competency to prescribe HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis.
