Learning objectives:
  1. Learners will be presented with numerous resources for finding and interpreting policies, procedures, and issues associated with human subject research. With this information, learners should be able to continue to identify and utilize such resources in the future. Learners will participate in discussions and surveys through this activity, which will help to determine their absorption and application of the materials presented.
  2. The regulations and ethical principles governing human subject research will be presented to learners, and learners should in turn be able to apply them to the IRB’s review and determination of human subject research. This will be assessed by the continuous monitoring of IRB reviews through internal monitoring, audits by MCW’s Corporate Compliance, audits by the FDA, and audits by AAHRPP.
  3. The differences between clinical activities and research-related activities will be explained to learners, along with the responsibilities in the review, oversight, and determination regarding these activities. Following this educational presentation, learners should be able to distinguish for themselves between clinical activities and research-related activities, and they should be able to determine the appropriate responsibilities for each type of activity. The retention and application of this concept will be assessed through the type of discussion in future meetings and in the level of understanding visible in each learner’s checklist uploaded in eBridge when reviewing any future submission to the IRB.
  4. Ethical principles, federal regulations, state regulations, institutional requirements, and guidance’s governing human subject research will be presented and explained to learners in the context of human subject research, with the goal of learners applying these principles and regulations to the review of human subject research. This will be assessed through the continued and consistent review, oversight, and conduct of human subject research.
