Perinatal Psychiatric Disorders: Barriers to Treating Mothers in Need
Christina L. Wichman, D.O.
Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics and Gynecology
Director, Women's Mental Health
Medical College of Wisconsin
There is increasing evidence demonstrating the need to accurately evaluate, diagnose, treat and manage women with psychiatric disorders during the perinatal period. Unfortunately, research suggests that women experience difficulties in accessing mental health and substance use treatment in the perinatal period. Providers often do not have the knowledge, experience, or comfort in treating women with mental health or substance use issues during the perinatal period. This presentation will differentiate types of perinatal psychiatric disorders, as well as provide some guiding principles of psychopharmacologic management of a perinatal patient. Additionally, the presentation will describe how collaborative care may be an ideal model in management of this patient population and describe an innovative program, the Perinatal Psychiatric Consultation Program, designed to address the mental health needs of patients within our region.
