Managing Infections in the 21st Century
The goal of this conference is to provide updated information on innovations and progress in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases that have arisen over the past 5 years which are relevant to the internal medicine practitioner both in the hospital and the primary care environment. Microbiological techniques utilized in the diagnosis of infectious diseases have progressed significantly, particularly with the advent of and spreading use of molecular techniques. Physicians and associated providers need to be aware of and understand these changes so as to best utilize their lab in the work-up of their patients. Antimicrobials are among the most used medications- about 60% of patients who are admitted receive at least one dose; in half the cases this is inappropriate. Additionally, we have the twin problems of growing antibiotic resistance and dwindling development of new antimicrobial agents. Understanding how best to apply this increasingly scarce resource is the key to optimal patient outcomes while preserving the utility of the existing antimicrobials. Finally, there are advances in the areas of vaccination, hepatitis C and HIV that internal medicine providers should be aware of.
