Program Description: 

The series focuses on outcomes research in chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease, delivery of care in dialysis units and chronic kidney disease clinics, emerging data on new treatments compared to current standard of care, continuing review of kidney biopsy pathology, and basic science research that may become future therapeutics.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Recognize the multifactorial effects of mineralocorticoid antagonism on hemodynamic, kidney, and cardiac function
  • Outline the data on steroidal mineralocorticoid antagonists and their risks and benefits in kidney disease.
  • Outline the data on nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid antagonists and the primary way this class of drugs differs from steroidal MRAs.
  • Recognize magnesium homeostasis in the body
  • Discuss the incidence, mechanisms, and treatment of hypomagnesemia in patients with cancer.
  • Discuss the incidence, mechanism, and treatment of acute kidney injury in the setting of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)
  • Recognize the scope of kidney care for the transgender patient.
  • Recognize the scope of gender affirming care for patients with kidney disease.
  • Outline the management of transitioning patients with advanced kidney disease to palliative care.
  • Outline the management of transitioning patients with kidney disease from pediatric to adult care.
