Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:
1 Evaluate the limitations of Hemodialysis (HD) in low-resource areas:
- Identify the challenges associated with access to HD in low-resource areas, including limited availability, high costs, and dependence on infrastructure.
- Analyze the environmental impact of HD, focusing on water consumption and electricity usage.
2. Recognize the advantages of Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) as a dialysis modality for low-resource settings:
- Identify the key benefits of PD in terms of lower cost, reduced reliance on infrastructure, and suitability for use in remote areas.
- Explore the environmental benefits of PD compared to HD, particularly regarding water and energy consumption.
3. Examine the potential and challenges of implementing PD programs in low-resource countries:
- Identify the effectiveness of PD in treating both Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).
- Analyze the success of the Saving Young Lives (SYL) program in establishing PD for AKI treatment in low-resource settings.
- Identify the key challenges for expanding PD programs for ESKD in low-resource areas, including government support, affordability, and training needs.
