Patients with serious illnesses such as advanced cancer, chronic organ failure, or dementia are at risk for poorly controlled pain and dyspnea.  Often these patients require opioid therapy in order to manage these symptoms, especially as their underlying advanced illness progresses.  In order to prescribe opioids in a safe and effective manner for these patients, clinicians need to have comprehensive clinical knowledge regarding various types of opioids, routes of opioid therapy, dosing of opioid therapy, and how to modify opioid therapy as their symptoms evolve with the underlying illness.
