Headache Symposium: Headache Disorders and Management in Special Populations
The Headache Symposium will update practicing physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and other health care professionals on the assessment and evaluation of patients with headache disorders. The conference will provide an overview on some of the most common headache types and subsequent management in special populations including pregnant and lactating women, children and adolescents, men, the elderly, and the underserved population.
Target Audience
Physicians (Attending physicians, preceptors, community physicians and other practicing physicians); Nurse Practitioners (AP/NP, FNP, NP, DNP); Learners (Residents, Fellows, Medical Students)
Learning Objectives
Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:
- Attendees will be able to better recognize headache disorders in special populations. Lists of specific headaches disorders that affect each specific population will be provided.
- Attendees will feel more comfortable understanding treatment options for headaches in these specific populations. For example, attendees will be provided a link to the medications that are contraindicated in pregnancy and those that are considered safe.
- With this better understanding of diagnosis and treatment, attendees will be better equipped to communicate with their patients on the subject matter.
- Attendees will discuss ways to improve communication with pediatric patients and older adults with headache to overcome hesitancy to communicate pain manifestation.
- For elderly or pregnant patients, attendees will be able to identify the most common secondary causes in headache.
- Attendees will confidently discuss limitations to chronic pain care in elderly, adolescent, pregnant, and underserved populations.
- Attendees will confidently discuss limitations to migraine care in underserved populations, and acknowledge best practices to facilitate better care.
- Attendees will recognize age-appropriate differential diagnoses for, clinical manifestations of, and treatment plans for chronic pain.
