ForwardNeurology's 50th Anniversary: Celebrating the Advances in Neurological Care
As the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Neurology celebrates their 50th Anniversary, we are excited to share our knowledge of the amazing advances in neurological care with you. This program is designed to meet the needs of primary care providers, including family medicine specialists, nurse practitioners, internists, pediatricians and community-based neurologists. We will educate clinicians on the best approaches to common neurological complaints and more complex situations, involving consideration of newer and novel therapeutic agents.
The workshop will also feature approaches of several specialist providers with extensive experience caring for these patient populations. Each speaker will share their respective insights, approaches to assessing the patient, ordering diagnostic testing, determining decision points for referral and presenting evidence-based therapeutic recommendations suitable for the community setting.
Target Audience
Learning Objectives
Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:
- Identify common neurologic disorders and initiate treatment and/or triage issues.
- Describe post stroke management and residual stroke deficits.
- Create strategies for transitioning pediatric patients inflicted with neurologic illness to adult neurology practices to aid their patients in navigating the system.
- Examine the role of neuropsychology in treating dementia.
- Identify neuroimmunological conditions across the lifespan.
- Implement new treatments in headache management.
- Identify best practice treatments for movement disorders.
Program:
Title: Advancements in Aphasia Rehabilitation
Speaker: Drs. Jeffrey Binder and Sara Pillay
Objectives:
- Evaluate Traditional and Emerging Therapies for Aphasia Rehabilitation: Attendees will gain knowledge about the current traditional therapies, such as speech-language therapy, as well as emerging therapies including neurostimulation techniques
- Understand the Benefits and Implementation of Intensive Therapy Programs: Attendees will learn about the characteristics, benefits, and evidence supporting intensive therapy programs
- Current models of language in the brain: Attendees will learn how modern neuroimaging studies have changed our views of language processing in the brain
- Current models of aphasia: Attendees will learn useful approaches to aphasia diagnosis and classification
Title: Advances in Brain Injury Science and Medicine: MCW’s Vital Role
Speaker: Dr. Michael McCrea
Objectives:
- Summarize major progress in traumatic brain injury research and care
- Highlight contributions by MCW
- Discuss future directions in clinical translation
Title: Epilepsy Across the Lifespan: Exploring Innovations in Seizure Management
Speaker: Drs. Avantika Singh and Chad Carlson
Objectives:
- Review advances in neonatal seizure management
- Explore the scope of genetic testing for early life epilepsy
- Redefine pharmacoresistant epilepsy
- Navigate effective transition from pediatric to adult epileptologist
- Identify pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to treatment resistant epilepsy in adults
Title: Alzheimer’s Disease: Past, Present, and Future
Speaker: Drs. Laura Umfleet and Piero Antuono
Objectives:
- Provide an overview of the diagnosis of AD from preclinical to dementia stages
- Discuss lifestyle habits that help prevent clinical symptoms of AD
- Discuss the latest oral and infusion treatments for AD

Objectives:
- Provide an update on the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis in the adult population
- Provide an update on the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis in the pediatric population
- Provide an update on symptomatic management in people with multiple sclerosis
