A Comprehensive Evidence-Based Approach To Assessment And Treatment Of Persons With Disorders Of Consciousness

The purpose of this seminar is to present the supporting rationale and tools for evidence-based assessment and monitoring of persons with DoC. The course will begin with a “state of the science” review of recent advances in assessment, treatment, and outcomes research focusing on persons with DoC. This introduction will be followed discussion and illustration of the top causes of diagnostic error in assessing patients with DoC.
 
Next, the course will review the principles, applications, and properties of the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R); review the prerequisite arousal facilitation protocol needed to conduct a reliable and valid CRS-R; and provide didactic and hands-on training in the use of the CRS-R-FAST (For Accelerated Standardized Testing), an abbreviated CRS-R intended for intensive care unit settings.
 
Finally, the course will conclude with a presentation and discussion of the interpretation of the CRS-R, including illustrative case studies; an introduction to the CRS-R Recovery Ruler; and an open forum discussion with attendees. Participant interaction is expected throughout the course.

Target Audience

Clinical providers involved in assessment, decision making, and family communication regarding persons with disorders of consciousness.  

Learning Objectives

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Describe the clinical and neurophysiologic features of syndromes associated with severe alterations in consciousness.   
  • Identify the top 10 causes of diagnostic error in assessing persons with severe alterations of consciousness.  
  • Administer, score, and interpret the CRS-R-FAST; Interpret CRS-R scores.
