Program Description: 

This educational activity is designed to build skills in clinical reasoning through case-based discussion presented by one of our senior residents familiar with the case. The mechanism of learning is via group discussion focused on expert role modeling where attending physicians ask questions and make teaching points as the case unfolds. Based on the discussion a differential diagnosis is generated and the appropriate laboratory tests and imaging are ordered. The results of the investigations are revealed, and the diagnosis and hospital course are discussed. The presenter concludes with a formal discussion of the diagnosis, keys to the case, and American Board of Pediatric content specifications relevant to the case.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Name how the history is used to make and test hypotheses.
  • Synthesize available data to construct a prioritized and complete differential diagnosis.
  • Discriminate between ordering various labs and tests based upon prioritized differential.
