Program Description: 

Scholarship in Progress is a virtual seminar series that provides opportunity for those engaged in child health in the areas of research, education and quality improvement to share their scholarly activity and promote interaction and opportunities among researchers and providers. Participants are exposed to ongoing activities in basic, translational and clinical research, educational development and quality improvements being performed by researchers and providers within pediatrics and child health.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

 

  • Enhance understanding of clinical research timelines by identifying key phases of study design, regulatory approval, patient enrollment, data collection, and analysis, and recognizing factors that may accelerate or delay study completion.
  • Describe evidence-based best practices for fracture pain management in the emergency department, including appropriate use of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, regional anesthesia techniques, and opioid-sparing strategies.
  • Apply clinical decision-making principles to the management of acute fractures (clinical condition: traumatic bone fractures) by integrating timely pain control, imaging, stabilization, and referral considerations to optimize patient outcomes in the emergency care setting.
  • Discuss the role of genomic testing in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), including indications, types of tests (e.g., rapid whole genome and exome sequencing), and their impact on diagnosis and clinical management of critically ill neonates.
  • Evaluate strategies for program development to expand access to genomic testing in Level III NICUs in Wisconsin, including infrastructure needs, workforce training, partnerships, and funding considerations.
  • Identify barriers and facilitators to implementing genomic testing programs in regional NICU settings, and propose practical solutions to improve equitable access and integration into neonatal care pathways.
