MCW Cancer Center 2015 Scientific Retreat: Connect, Discover, Achieve - Working Together Toward NCI Designation
Effective cancer research requires collaboration across the research continuum, and center-wide retreats provide an opportunity for the full range and scope of researchers to share their work and find collaborators and partners. NCI Designation will provide additional support, funding and opportunity for cancer researchers at MCW, and it is important that faculty and staff understand how designation will be achieved. Propelling research from the laboratory to effective patient treatment is challenging for a variety of reasons, and researchers need to understand how to remove barriers to drug discovery.
The following areas will be addressed during this one-day conference:
- Research collaboration
- The path from basic, translational and clinical research to effective drug discovery and the role of genomics in this process
- Knowledge of the current strengths and gaps in the process to become an NCI designated cancer center
Hours of Participation for Allied Health Care Professionals
The Medical College of Wisconsin designates this activity for up to 5.75 hours of participation for continuing education for allied health professionals.
Target Audience
- Faculty
- Cancer Center members
- Clinicians
- Staff - MCW, Froedtert, CHW, BRI, VA
- Researchers
- Community members
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, I will be able to:
- Understand the NCI designation process for newly-designated centers, and where the MCW Cancer Center is in this process.
- Understand what other cancer researchers and clinicians are doing at MCW, UWM, and other partner institutions, and how to leverage this work with my own – particularly in the areas of genomics and drug discovery.
- Better understand how to mitigate or remove barriers to drug discovery.
