Phacoemulsification cataract surgery is increasing used of a procedure to lower intraocular pressure (IOP). The strongest evidence is for IOP reduction in cases of Closed Angel Glaucoma. The effect is more controversial in eyes with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma. THere are numerous predictive factors that may help the clinician in determining whether to do cataract surgery only versus glaucoma surgery.

At the conclusion of this activity, I will be able to:
- Identify cases of closed angle glaucoma that may be amenable to cataract surgery and possibly clear lens extraction
- Identify at least 2 possible mechanisms by which Phacoemulsification lowers eye pressure
- State whether narrow or open angle eyes have better liklihood of improvement in eye pressure after Phacoemulsification
