This educational program is designed to enhance healthcare professionals’ confidence and competence in conducting sensitive, high-stakes goals-of-care conversations with patients and families. Through evidence-based communication strategies and practical application, participants will strengthen their ability to align medical interventions with patients’ values, preferences, and care goals.

The program emphasizes effective interdisciplinary communication and documentation practices to support coordinated, patient-centered care. By improving shared decision-making and care planning, learners will be better equipped to reduce unnecessary or non-beneficial treatments, while fostering trust, satisfaction, and meaningful engagement among patients and families. Special attention is given to addressing the needs of underserved communities to promote equitable, compassionate, and culturally responsive care.

Learning Objectives

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Acquire and or demonstrate the ability to conduct culturally sensitive goals of care conversations, understanding ethical/legal frameworks, and using EMR tools for documentation. Competence will be evaluated through pre and post assessments, role-paying feedback and workshop evaluations
  • Apply ethical, legal, and clinical principles to guide discussions about prognosis, treatment options, and advance directives
  • Identify and address emotional, cultural , and systemic barriers to shared decision
