This course is designed to help clinical healthcare practitioners increase competency in safely and effectively administering proper procedural sedation to adult patients. The practice of procedural sedation, also known as moderate or conscious sedation, has evolved to meet the practice and patient management needs of the medical and dental professions.

- Complete a pre-sedation patient assessment.
- Acquire patient consent.
- Develop an individualized plan for sedation.
- Perform an appropriate physical examination.
- Perform moderate sedation safely and effectively, per regulatory established guidelines.
- Demonstrate didactic knowledge of safe sedation practice.
- Demonstrate psychomotor skills required to establish and maintain an airway and skill to manage an unstable cardiovascular system.
- Plan for and address special patient needs and appropriately respond to emergency situations.
- Seek anesthesiology consultation for high risk patients.
- Use oxygen supplementation when necessary or where feasible.
- Monitor the recovery phase and discharge the patient according to direct observation or predefined criteria.
