- Describe that, while there is no FDA indication for the use of any long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medication, LAIs are being prescribed to children and adolescents to target severe psychiatric symptoms complicated by treatment noncompliance.
- Identify that there are no randomized controlled clinical trials of LAI use in youth, that those studies and reports that do exist are of low to very low quality, and that existing practice parameters regarding the treatment of psychotic disorders in children and adolescents give little or no guidance on the use of LAIs.
- Recognize that this lack of a sufficient evidence base and the lack of any published clinical guidance likely discourages LAI use in youth and that an expert consensus clinical pathway that utilizes what is currently known about LAI use in youth and outlines a process that is consistent, set guardrails, and helps to establish a standard of care is needed.
