Program Description: 

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Grand Rounds provides new and updated information in the field of mental health to aid in continuing professional development. This program highlights the latest information in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, the newest research areas, and other pertinent issues in clinical psychiatry and mental health. Session presentations are held on Wednesday mornings 8-9 a.m., virtually and at the Medical College of Wisconsin Research Park Center when conditions permit. Grand Rounds runs the first three Wednesdays of each month from September through June. Generally, in-person Grand Rounds will take place on the 3rd Wednesday of that month's Grand Rounds.

Learning objectives: 

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:

  • Analyze the ethical tensions between patient autonomy and suicide prevention when evaluating psychiatric patients who express a wish to die in clinical practice.
  • Evaluate the limitations of standard capacity assessment models (Appelbaum-Grisso) when applied to psychiatric patients requesting medical assistance in dying.
  • Compare international legal frameworks for psychiatric MAID across jurisdictions to inform clinical and ethical reasoning about end-of-life policy.
  • Assess competing claims about the irremediability of psychiatric suffering using current empirical data and consensus criteria in clinical and ethical deliberation.
  • Apply multiple ethical frameworks (principlism, deontological, utilitarian, virtue, care ethics) to clinical scenarios involving psychiatric patients and end-of-life decision-making.
