An Academic Festschrift Honoring Dr. John A. Weigelt

Milwaukee, WI US
November 10, 2017

You are invited to join the Department of Surgery in honoring Dr. John A. Weigelt, Milt & Lidy Lunda/Charles Aprahamian Professor of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, for his countless contributions to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, and our medical campus.  Dr. Weigelt has been a faculty leader at MCW since 1999, when he was recruited from the University of Minnesota as Chief of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery, a position he held until earlier this year, and General Surgery Residency Program Director. His leadership as the Trauma Program Director established Froedtert and MCW as a national leader in the care of injured patients and the only Level One Trauma Center in southeastern Wisconsin.  He most recently completed 10 years of service as both the Associate Dean for Quality at MCW and Medical Director of Quality at Froedtert Hospital (2005-2015).

A highly regarded surgical educator, Dr. Weigelt was recognized by the American College of Surgeons in 2015 with the Distinguished Service Award.  During his career, he has mentored over 80 medical students, residents, fellows and faculty.

For over 30 years, Dr. Weigelt has greatly impacted the quality of patient care and the education of faculty, residents, and students around the world.  We have been most fortunate to benefit from his energy and enthusiasm for patient care and his advocacy for quality, honesty and commitment in the practice of medicine.

This activity is being held to coincide with the celebration of the career of Dr. John Weigelt. The educational activity is designed to review the historical and current impact of Dr. Weigelt’s contributions to the areas of trauma, critical care, quality improvement, education, leadership, and mentorship. A review of the current state and future directions in these areas will be covered. A significant focus of this activity will be on leadership and mentorship which are areas of specific focus for the medical school and national surgical organizations.
