This educational symposium is designed to highlight a broad range of topics relating to artificial intelligence (AI) in modern surgical practice. It will familiarize the audience with recent advances in the field, ethical considerations, and regulations surrounding its use.

Learning Objectives

Participants who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:
  • Review the fundamental mechanisms and capabilities of recent advances in artificial intelligence, specifically generative-type models, and how they potentially can be integrated into surgical practice.
  • Interpret ethical considerations that are associated with the use of artificial intelligence in surgical practice, including strategies to navigate ethical dilemmas and maintain trust when using artificial intelligence in surgical practice.
  • Use existing and emerging data standards, data ontologies, and regulations related to data sharing that support the implementation of artificial intelligence in surgical practice.

The Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin is excited to host the Inaugural Selig Artificial Intelligence in Surgery Symposium! This national conference will highlight recent innovations and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) as they relate to surgical practice. Specific areas that will be highlighted are: surgical data science, health-system implementation, and innovation/entrepreneurship. The program will be highly interactive, featuring keynote talks from national surgical AI thought leaders and local experts, research-in-motion session, and a hack-a-thon. Please reference the Call for Participation if you are interested in presenting during the research-in-motion session.

The Artificial Intelligence in Surgery Symposium will be held on September 28, 2024, at the Medical College of Wisconsin Main Campus, located at 8701 W. Watertown Plank Road, Milwaukee WI, 53226. The event will take place in the Alumni Center. See parking and building entry directions below, as well as photos in the brochure attached under the "agenda" tab. 

Parking: Complimentary lot parking is available across 87th Street from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Follow signage to employee parking lot, pull up to entrance gates.

  • If you do not have an MCW Badge:
    • At the gate, click the gray button that will ring to Public Safety.
    • Wait until someone picks up, and let them know that you are here for the symposium. They will open the gate.
    • Park in any surface lot spot or in the covered parking structure.
  • Cross 87th St. towards the MCW Building in the photo above.
  • Proceed to the MCW main entrance, as seen in the photo.
  • The revolving doors will be locked, to the left and right there are entrances with intercoms. Press the button and tell security you are here for the symposium.
  • Follow signage to the Alumni Center.
