Program Description:

The CE activity will help physicians overcome the traditional expectations held by patients that a drug is the automatic response to any symptom or disease. The education is designed to help learners overcome the blinders associated with biopharmacologic model to expand their horizons to understand new possibly more effective strategies for the management of chronic pain. The CE activity will help learners overcome the reluctance to involve PT and Psychology as a team in the management of their patients.

Enablers:
The current frustration and associated heart sink response doctors have with pain management will be motivation to apply new learned skill sets. Practitioners will be able to take advantage of the ‘bio’ skill set that they have already developed to compliment the new skill sets introduced in this education. Chronic pain education ranges from zero to six hours in most medical schools and is biased towards a biopharmacologic approach. The opioid crisis is an unintended consequence of this rote reliance on drugs. The biopharmacologic model targets the pain signal with drugs but does not address the deeper factors that sustain the chronic pain syndrome.

Target audience:
  • Primary Care Practitioners
  • Physical Therapists
  • Behavioral Health Providers
Learning objectives:
  • Explain how you would approach the patient differently using biobehavioral vs biopharmacologic model, as explained by the 4PCP modules.
  • Utalize their own Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) until they see a satisfactory decrement in opioid prescribing.
  • Identify, explore, and recount the patients status in the following domains as explained by the 4PCP Modules:

Pain beliefs
Validation
Catastrophization
Fear-Avoidance
Self-efficacy
