This course will focus on genetic and genomic ethics in the field of Precision Medicine.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to: 

  • Define the nature and structure of ethical dilemmas in precision medicine.
  • Examine two important ethical principles that frequently arise in the context of precision medicine: the child's right to an open future and the principle of non-directiveness.
  • Evaluate ethical frameworks that apply principles to clinical vignettes.

This module is presented with a pre-recorded PowerPoint presentation and sound.  An audio lecture is given using visual key points listed on the PowerPoint presentation.  Following the presentation, learners will be asked quiz questions to test retainment of knowledge gained in the presentation. Learners are able to complete the module at their own pace.

Jeremy Garrett, Ph.D., is Research Faculty in Bioethics at Children’s Mercy Kansas City and Professor of Pediatrics and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He has edited or co-edited three books, published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books, and been PI of research on the ethics of returning individual results in genomic biobank research (NHGRI R21HG006613). His research focuses on ethical concepts invoked in clinical genetics, genetic counseling, and genetic research, including the duty to rescue, duties of reciprocity and entrustment, children’s right to an open future, actionability and utility, and genetic exceptionalism.
